Alpha-male paternity in elephant seals

摘要: The aim of this study was to assess paternity males that dominated mating in harems at northern (Mirounga angustirostris) and southern (M. leonina) elephant seal rookeries using DNA fingerprinting microsatellite analysis. Southern alpha had greater reproductive success than most alphas similar-sized harems. Comparison the relatedness between pups within also suggested fewer achieved matings population. This consistent with behavioral observations suggest competition for mates Reproductive estimates some cases, but lower expected males. A predicted from behavior may arise a variety factors including sperm competition, male depletion frequent mating, or reduced fertility. alternatives are discussed context environmental historical factors.
