摘要: This chapter gives an overview of design and optimization few-mode optical fibers (FMF) for space-division multiplexed transmission. The criteria are outlined, along with performance limitations the traditional step-profile graded-index profiles. trade-offs between number usable modes (related to total channel capacity), differential group delay, mode attenuation, coupling, impact on MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) receiver complexity outlined. Improved fiber designs analyzed which maximize capacity foreseeable next-generation technology. FMF measurement technology is overviewed.
