摘要: The Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia, is managed under the GBR Marine Park Act (1975) and seen as a shining example of marine resource management. principle tool management zoning for multiple use. We examined surveillance illegal fishing around two inshore islands (Magnetic Orpheus) in 2000/2001. Both are near Townsville, largest city adjacent to GBR. Surveillance effort was low, with vessels present on only 16% days year. Measurable but low levels recreational occurred within no-take zones. Levels decreased increasing effort. Thus not completely successful protecting fish targeted by fisheries, even most highly enforced sections Park. expansion zones 2004 from 4.6% 33.4% area 358,000 km2 represents considerable challenge future enforcement.
