Prediction of the transparency in the visible range of x-ray absorbing nanocomposites built upon the assembly of LaF_3 or LaPO_4 nanoparticles with poly(methyl methacrylate)

摘要: A theoretical multiscale approach combining density functional theory and four-flux calculations based on the radiative transfer is used to prospect optical properties of nanocomposite materials composed inorganic nanoparticles lanthanum-containing compounds (LaF3 or LaPO4) embedded in Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). This investigation shows that a potential route produce lead-free x-ray shielding screens with high transparency visible range (>70% incident light) may consist incorporating colorless LaF3 LaPO4 spherical particles diameter lower than 6 nm PMMA panel from minimum thickness 3 mm volumetric fraction at least 10%. In terms attenuation, this would lead equivalency 0.1 mm (lead foil).
