摘要: The beautiful, high resolution radio maps of jets, lobes, and hot-spots coming off the VLA challenge theorists to explain these phenomena in terms simple, well-understood physical laws. difficulty is often not one finding a reasonable set laws, but their solutions. Analytic solutions jet structure are limited steady, isentropic, 1-dimensional flow channels slowly-varying cross section; analytic studies stability modes small amplitude which, this regime, assume equal importance as well unimportance for gross flow. Numerical simulation provides means investigating those time-dependent, multidimensional, nonlinear that beyond reach tools — must be relevant an understanding astrophysical jets. In age when computing hardware software advancing so rapidly compared techniques, it natural turn computer answers, approximate though they may be.
