Comparative study of mental health and quality of life in long term refugees and host populations in Oru-Ijebu, Southwest Nigeria

摘要: Refugees as “People Living in Highly Stressful Situation” are particularly vulnerable to mental ill-health a result of the trauma experienced pre- and post-migration. The lack information on health disparities refugees non-refugees West Africa is what this study aimed bridge. A cross-sectional design was employed using cluster sampling technique. Interviewer-administered structured questionnaires consisting Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), WHO quality life (WHOQOL-BREF) Community Quality Life (CQoL) were used for data collection. Data analyzed with SPSS version 17. Logistic regression analysis determine predictors status QoL. Respondents consisted 444(45.7%) 527(54.3%) non-refugees. Two-thirds 292 (66%) Liberians. Mean age: - 34.8 ± 12.8 years versus 33.3 ± 8.1 years (p < 0.05). While majority 376(84.7%) married, most 468(88.8%) native population not (p < 0.001). Significantly higher proportion had polygamous marriages, lived poorer type accommodation no formal education compared overall QoL CQoL scores both significantly lower three times more likely than have poor [OR: 3.43; 95%CI: 1.83-6.40]. Overall, being currently ill tripled odds 2.73; 1.98-3.77]. Unskilled workers 2.78; 1.68-4.60], skilled 2.98; 2.03-4.38] unemployed 1.94; 1.29-2.92] two or professionals. occupational major threats refugees. Results point need continued attention only healthcare needs but welfare, housing, employment support long-term non-refugee populations alike.
