LAN interconnection via ATM satellite links for CAD applications: the UNOM experiment

摘要: An extensive technical trial of ATM technology was conducted in the second half 1994, as a joint effort among partners UNOM, project RACE program Commission European Communities. The based on LAN interconnection over virtual paths established by cross-connects at two separate sites microelectronics manufacturer SGS-Thomson linked digital satellite transmission systems. Details experimental equipment used are set out this paper. A Reed-Solomon block coding scheme, adapted to cell transfer, added onto bit stream achieve high-quality, cost-effective links. This field represents one first examples transport links through compact VSAT earth stations installed user's premises. Trial users placed strong emphasis TCP-IP networking. Significant performance improvement terms transfer time measured when using modified versions kernel files and utilities providing enhancements basic TCP protocol recommended Internet RFC 1323. has explicitly validated use VSATs, e.g. for B-ISDN user access corporate networks.
