Navigating uncertainty: Observations from the Congo-Rwanda border

摘要: This article concentrates on how people make use of the state boundary between cities Goma, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), and Gisenyi, Rwanda to cope with specific uncertainties either side, these borderlanders, by doing so, expose themselves new they at same time subvert perpetuate border through their activities. tension-filled separates two countries that, after fifteen years war, proxy warfare mutual allegations supporting militias rebel groups, have only very recently started hesitant efforts towards a political rapprochement. Despite long-lasting ethnic identity conflicts in this region remaining tensions (for overviews see Mamdani 2001; Lemarchand 2009; Prunier 2009) border, situated Basin densely populated highlands Uganda Rwanda, has always kept its function as transit point for long-distance trade connecting east west Central Africa (see Tegera/Johnson 2007).
