摘要: While studying the literature on recent and fossil Hippopotami it became evident to me that a number of authors ascribe third milk incisor Hippopotamus amphibius L. Consequently this species, as regards dentition, should be "hexaprotodont" like Pliocene Pleistocene species from Siwaliks India, Burma Java; H. pantanellii Joleaud (1920, p. 18) Casino near Siena in Italy (vide Pantanelli, 1879, 318, pl. IV fig. 5). According Major (1896, 978) young specimens lemerlei Grandidier Madagascar occasionally are hexaprotodont too. When dealing with Blainville (1847, 32) made following remarks: "Dans le tres-jeune âge, il est certain qu'il y trois paires d'incisives en haut comme bas, et que ces incisives sont beaucoup plus subegales, dont une paire excessivement petite n'est pas remplacee, la premiere superieurement, troisieme inferieurement". But note he adds: "Je n'ai reellement vu celle d'en formant calotte convexe dedans dehors de seconde; mais je suppose, par analogie, etait gingivale restee dans preparation." In explanation figure, showing very lower jaw states: "H. tres-jeune; d'origine inconnue montrant les incisives." (1.c., 103). The figure (1.e., Atlas, VIII side at right) shows right half jaw, which id1, id2 cd can distinctly seen! figured by Owen (1840-45, part II, 143 2) also no is present.
