Tenure-based residential segregation in post-reform Chinese cities: a case study of Shanghai

摘要: The Chinese cities, once characterised by egalitarianism, are becoming the most unequal cities in world. However, little is known about spatial implications of such a tremendous transition. This paper examines residential segregation post-reform Shanghai. For first time studying fine resolution data on level committee, from fifth population census conducted 2000, used. variation housing tenure found to be prominent. Most variables Index Dissimilarity (ID) for above 0.5, while ‘commodity purchased’ and ‘public rental’ as high 0.7, indicating remarkable concentration various groups. No evidence, however, suggests extent social groups comparable West UK US. ID between rural migrants local residents just 0.2–0.4. with low-level high-level educational attainment around 0.3. In terms hukou (household registration) status, tenure, division central city its surrounding areas identified. communities homogeneous heterogeneous population. all, urban China tenure-based segregation.
