摘要: The static and dynamic characteristics of the jaws, tongue, other structures surrounding oral cavity mammals strongly affect types environments in which a particular mammal can successfully function. A highly specialized mouth such as that noted anteaters by Sonntag (1925), is an extreme example ingestive apparatus sets very narrow limitations on usable habitats. With reference to primary focus this chapter, liquid ingestion, less dramatic but equally significant constraints are found adult animals unable suck liquids, presumably because their characteristics. (See pp. 62–80, Drinking Behavior, especially p. 72 Table 4). specific intake intraoral manipulation mechanism may have great adaptive advantage for given ecological niche. However, possibility evolutionary modification event major, relatively rapid changes habitat be greatly reduced. Nonspecialized omnivores, having with wide range foods sources, avoid these problems, Hiiemae Crompton (1971) Jolly (1972) noted. It omnivores not able exploit some habitats efficiently feeders.
