摘要: Amebiasis is the disease caused by enteric dwelling protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. The WHO considers amebiasis as one of major health problems in developing countries; it surpassed only malaria and schistosomiasis for death parasitic infection. E. histolytica primarily lives colon a harmless commensal, but capable causing devastating dysentery, colitis liver abscess. What triggers switch to pathogenic phenotype onset unknown. We are becoming increasingly aware complexity host-parasite interaction. During chronic stages amebiasis, host develops an immune response that incapable eliminating tissue resident parasites, while actively immunosuppresses host. However, most individuals with symptomatic infections succumb episode dysentery. Why halt invasion minority progress remains poorly understood. This review presents current understanding processes shape outcome during its different stages.
