Neurodegeneration behind bars: from molecules to jurisprudence.

摘要: It is estimated 40,000 inmates with dementia are currently incarcerated in U.S. prisons forecasted increases topping a quarter of million persons by 2050 (1). The reasons for the graying prison population multiple, including longer incarceration periods, mandatory sentences, and an increase number older first offenders (2). also believed that people age at faster rate than general (3). category has increased steadily over past two decades. According to Human Rights Watch report, 60 years entering state as new court commitments grew 109% between 1995 2009 (4). Recent studies demonstrate 54% bvFTD patients commit criminal acts (5) since this condition represents 5–6% all dementias, it possible accounts large numbers prisons. Moreover, up 51% misdiagnosed initial evaluation because symptoms resemble psychiatric conditions missed routine cognitive testing (6). In opinion article, we emphasize multidisciplinary approach bvFTD; believe input from disciplines such neurobiology, psychology, psychiatry, forensic jurisprudence could help us comprehend better complex disorder.
