摘要: Abstract The intense and prolonged consumption of alcohol can trigger neurological disorders or aggravate pre-existing diseases. Very often, redox imbalance is involved in the pathogenesis such ethanol-induced functional disturbances; under this scenario, antioxidant agents might have a neuroprotective role. We reviewed electrophysiological effects on brain function by experimentally analyzing phenomenon known as “cortical spreading depression” (CSD). CSD reversible depolarization-induced reduction electrical activity response to stimulation point cortical surface. analysis alterations propagation velocity provides evidence changes associated with ethanol consumption. Experimental data acute chronic are revisited here. analyzed novel findings ethanol-treated rats that suggested protective effect molecule α-tocopherol alterations, while possible underlying mechanisms action also discussed. conclude studies substantially contribute better understanding consumption/brain function/antioxidant relationship.
