Fit for public consumption? An exploratory study of the reporting of nutrition research in UK tabloids with regard to its accuracy, and a preliminary investigation of public attitudes towards it.

摘要: Objective: To explore the quality (accuracy, balance, practical context) of tabloid articles reporting on nutrition research, and public attitudes towards it. Design: A qualitative multi-method study consisting a systematic analysis series focus groups with members public. Setting: Tabloid newspapers (nationwide). Focus were conducted at UK university. Subjects: All collated for full calendar month. Members local Women's Institute non-teaching staff within University College Chester recruited as group participants. Results: Twenty-nine included. standardised TAT (Tabloid Analysis Tool) was used total thirty-nine times (once each research cited). Twenty-six failed to accurately report results, thirty-six mention significant limitations, only five quoted third-party expert source. Two groups, eight participants, conducted. Attitudes expressed largely negative, highlighting elements confusion scepticism. Articles more likely be disregarded than acted upon, although some value attached providing information. Conclusions: is not sufficiently accurate, balanced or contextualised, are wholly favourable. Guidance journalists via registered dietitians strengthening present links could serve utilise this form mass media effectively.
