摘要: Glides are segments which only contain the element I or U, not occupying central position of a nucleus. In English, glides cannot occur word-finally preceding consonant. addition, have established that they prohibited between stressed and an unstressed vowel if is short. The latter restriction can be explained as part former such intervocalic consonants analysed virtual geminates, for argue on basis distribution short long vowels. also examine off-glides, derived on-glides in analyse them CV approach. show off-glides closing diphthongs just associated to C V position, instead occupy both. from high vowels vowel, obvious [ˈɒbv{i/j}əs], result spreading movement following empty inside hiatus. Finally, sequence [ju:] light diphthong overlapping account on-glide. different types thus distinguished by differences association melody skeleton. No segmental representation need posited.
