Functional polymorphism in lycopene beta-cyclase gene as a molecular marker to predict bixin production in Bixa orellana L. (achiote)

摘要: Bixin is an apocarotenoid obtained from the seed aril of Bixa orellana L., a tropical plant known as achiote in Mexico. This compound second most commonly used natural colouring for food and pharmaceutical industries. B. outcrossing species that displays high genetic variability. Recently, colour traits sexual organs were associated with biosynthesis accumulation bixin mature seeds. Herein, we describe new approach genotype–phenotype association by surveying lycopene beta-cyclase (Boβ-LCY1) gene variation sixteen accessions divided into three groups according to contrasting traits, such flower colour, fruit production. Using combination single-strand conformational polymorphism techniques sequencing polymorphic bands, identified several single-nucleotide polymorphisms haplotypes. Surprisingly, observed these haplotypes consistent same previously characterized phenotypic traits. We derived putative sequence Boβ-LCY1 surveyed variations this sequence. The heterozygosity alleles resulted higher content, likely heterosis metabolite. These findings augment toolbox available selection improvement provide reliable phenotype–genotype method commercial varietal selection, contributing development laboratory identify desirable species.
