摘要: This article corresponds to a lecture delivered during the Endocrine Pathology Society symposium held in Boston on 21 March 2015 (104th USCAP meeting, 21-27). It focuses importance of cytopathology endocrine thyroid pathology and limits pitfalls diagnosis follicular cell lesions. Lights shadows are present each diagnostic technique: Fine needle aspiration has imposed itself as gold standard nodules thanks its easiness execution high cost-effectiveness ratio. A milestone this field is represented by National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Needle Aspiration (FNA) State Science Conference hosted October 22-23, 2007 NCI, followed series documents published Diagnostic Cytopathology Cytojournal (2008) well an atlas entitled: The Bethesda System for Reporting (TBSRTC): terminology criteria (2010, Springer). "Gray" zones still remain, causing difficulties anxiety cytopathologist when facing challenging cases. Each category TBSRTC analyzed discussed concise fashion with special emphasis cases such atypia undetermined significance (AUS), suspicion neoplasms (SFNs), diagnoses papillary carcinoma (PTC) Hashimoto thyroiditis variant (FVPTC). Our aim was better define clarify spectrum lesions nodule samplings underline order avoid pitfalls. New emerging molecular biology techniques may represent useful tools selected morphological lead new therapeutic approaches line drug-tailored therapy personalized medicine.
