摘要: Since 1971, serial carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels have been measured to monitor patients after primary resection of colorectal cancer. Based solely on a rise in CEA level above the baseline established resection, 146 were readmitted hospital. Chest films, liver-spleen scan, colonoscopy, bone abdominal and pelvic CAT hepatic arteriograms performed, elevated confirmed before reexploration was undertaken. In patients, 139 (95%) had recurrences, 81 (58%) these resectable for potential cure. Two first 22 re-explored between 1971 1975 are still living 11 14 years second look; 45 reoperated upon from 1976 through 1979 followed at least 5 years, (31%) living. A proved be sensitive indicator recurrence prompted symptoms developed. Early alternative therapy begun with unresectable recurrences.
