摘要: Abstract Introduction Since their introduction, penile prostheses have consistently remained a superior treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction (ED) refractory to conservative measures. Ongoing enhancements prosthetic design, materials, and surgical techniques resulted in improved outcomes. Aim To review available literature on notable historical advancements improvements of the prosthesis, summarize contemporary outcomes recent devices, discuss possible future directions prosthesis. Methods A PubMed search was performed all articles published from 1960 present relating Priority given series 12 months follow‐up or greater, larger series, studies reporting more models. Main Outcome Measures included leading to, rates mechanical failures, infections, satisfaction prostheses. Results Penile undergone numerous since initial reports synthetic materials utilized 1950s. Among others, device include Parylene coating, Bioflex® material, Inhibizone TM antibacterial impregnation, hydrophilic lockout valves, easy release pump mechanisms, which reliability, reduced infection rates, and/or patient Contemporary 3‐piece report survival 81–94%, 68–89%, 57–76% at 5, 10, 15 years, respectively. Infection current devices are 1–2% first‐time, low‐risk populations, 2–3% higher risk groups, partner 92–100% 91–95%, Two‐piece malleable associated slightly reliability decreased satisfaction. Minimal data currently exist selected including Peyronie's disease corporal fibrosis. Conclusions excellent, long‐term remain gold‐standard ED. Additional research prospective utilizing objective measures standardized questionnaires is required. Trost L Hellstrom WJG. History, outcomes, prostheses: literature. Sex Med Rev 2013;1:150–163.
