摘要: Since the discovery of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency viruses HIV-1 HIV-2 in patients 25 years ago, efforts have been directed toward identifying or developing appropriate models for this disease. Several species nonhuman primates can be productively infected with primate lentiviruses HIV-1, HIV-2, SIV, genetic chimeras HIV SIV (SHIV), ensuing pathology has many elements common infection humans. This chapter summarizes key features that developed AIDS research as 2006. It focuses on (1) major contributions limitations these to our understanding pathogenesis (2) uses test prophylactic therapeutic approaches prevent and/or limit is intended a reference investigators field well those considering utilizing address specific questions research. In an overview type, comprehensive referencing studies not possible, examples are included effort cite some important performed date. Many excellent focused reviews subject written past several years, readers encouraged consult details, examples, additional references.
