摘要: Carotenoids have traditionally been subscribed to their role as accessory pigments in photosynthesis. However, the large and growing body of literature investigated on field revealed that carotenoids fulfil a plethora essential roles plants but also animals humans. Recent studies emphasizing functional molecules derived from oxidation β-cyclocitral or dihydroactinidiolide led renewed interest, opening new era for research. This review brings together knowledge obtained so far regarding diversity functions carotenoids, highlighting versatility remarkable parallel both animals. Evolutionary aspects responses biotic abiotic stresses are discussed. Furthermore, we outline way which one can understand environmental regulation enhance carotenoid content food. In addition, an up-to-date overview elements information storage system signals is provided with suggestions future directions
