摘要: Summary Background: Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is associated with considerable morbidity and its incidence seems to be increasing. Haematogenous spread an important aetiological factor. Aim: The objective was describe a series of patients VO search for relationship between preceding bacteraemia subsequent the same pathogen. Design methods: A retrospective study all treated cases in tertiary hospital over 10-year period. Results: There were 129 (involving 125 patients) that received antimicrobial treatment. Eighty-three (66%) male mean age 59.5 years (range 1 month 87 years). vertebral level involved lumbar 66 (53%) thoracic 35 (28%) cases. Seventy-four (59%) had microbiologically confirmed aetiology. diagnostic yield from procedures 46 36% blood culture bone biopsy, respectively. Staphylococcus aureus most common pathogen [38 74 (51%) cases]. Nine 38 (24%) previous year. Conclusions: causing ability cause metastatic complications including VO. high proportion developing following documented bacteraemia, sometimes many months previously, reinforce importance adequate aggressive treatment bacteraemia. must considered presenting back pain up year after Previous bacteraemias relevant pathogens can help guide antibiotic at presentation if biopsy cannot obtained.
