摘要: Francesco Primaticcio designed his celebrated Galerie d'Ulysse at Fontainebleau (now destroyed) a time when the epic genre was being updated and redefined. One of most popular scenes from gallery, Ulysses Penelope recounting their adventures to one another in bed (from book 23 Odyssey ), adapted revised an independent composition by himself: (Toledo Museum Art, ca. 1560). In contrast Fontaine-bleau mural, artist's self-conscious, refined pictorial language for canvas converts energy into lyric sentimentality. As result, becomes central focus new composition. Through gesture painting stresses such themes as beauty desire, further employs prized poetic devices reversal ( peripeteia ) recognition (anagnorisis). By responding formal prescriptions both romance genres, exploits expressive visual potential Homeric episode utterly novel way. The opens up questions ways reading, viewing, interpreting mythic subject matter sixteenth-century France .
