摘要: Conventional plant breeding is based on genetic variation and selection of the desired genotypes. The availability diversity starting point any programme. In most crops, sufficient present among land races, cultivars their wild relatives. conventional programmes this followed by several years field evaluation before a genotype released as an improved cultivar. many sexually propagated e.g., rice, wheat, maize, barley, variability usually recombined through hybridization. recombinants are then selected from segregating populations in subsequent generations which tested, multiplied cultivars. However, number important crops such banana, plantain, date palm, citrus, potato, sweet pineapple, apple, pear vegetative parts, not amenable to improvement same manner plants. Many these plants complex polyploids, take flower fruit, some self-incompatible. others, banana there little or no seed formation. Often propagule size too big bulky handle grow large populations. Hence, it possible produce sufficiently required obtain recombinant short duration. plants, mutation induction offers possibility alter few characters without disrupting genome while retaining all other clones.
