Policing Disaster: An Analytical Review of the Literature on Policing, Disaster, and Post‐traumatic Stress Disorder

摘要: A large body of research findings suggests that law-enforcement officers are confronted with erratic, periodic, and unpredictable high-stress experiences in the line duty. There is also an increasing amount on police as first responders to disasters their mental health. Recent events, like social disorder generated by Hurricanes Sandy Katrina, aftermath 9/11 attacks, violence at Newtown, created a unique matrix for stressors who may not have had much training deal associated or support draw upon when confronting residual emotional traumas they experienced result. In this context, we conduct analytical review literature stress instances which responded disasters. Moreover discuss extant related rates post-traumatic disorder, effects PTSD diagnoses personal professional lives officers, sources available them trauma-inducing events. We conclude summary current critique what missing including attention subclinical PTSD, proper training, lack institutional screening vulnerability, dearth evaluation “what works” disaster preparedness officers.
