摘要: Disorders and diseases of the gastrointestinal system encompass a wide array pathogenic mechanisms as result genetic, infectious, neoplastic, inflammatory conditions. Inflammatory in general are rising incidence emerging clinical problems gastroenterology hepatology. Hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) is stress-inducible enzyme that has been shown to confer protection various organ-system models. Its downstream effectors, carbon monoxide biliverdin have also offer these beneficial effects. Many studies suggest induction HO-1 expression tissues cells plays critical role cytoprotection resolving inflammation well tissue injury. In this review, we examine protective its effectors modulating upper (esophagus stomach) lower (small large intestine) tract, liver, pancreas. Cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic activities make it promising if not ideal therapeutic target for system.
