Beyond GDP: Measuring and achieving global genuine progress

摘要: article i nfo While global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased more than three-fold since 1950, economic wel- fare, as estimated by the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), actually decreased 1978. We synthesized estimates of GPI over 1950-2003 time period for 17 countries which been estimated. These contain 53% population and 59% GDP. compared with (GDP), Human Development Index (HDI), Ecological Footprint, Biocapacity, Gini coefficient, Life Satisfaction scores. Results show a significant variation among these countries, but some major trends. also GPI/capita period. Global peaked in 1978, about same that Footprint exceeded Biocapacity. almost all not improved significantly 1975. Globally, does increase beyond GDP/capita around $7000/capita. If we distributed income equitably planet, current world GDP ($67 trillion/yr) could support 9.6 billion people at is perfect welfare indicator, it far better approximation policies need to shift account real merely growth.
