摘要: Digital citizen science platforms are prominent examples of modern volunteerism that provide people with opportunities to observe natural phenomena and engage in scientific processes. In this study, we explore the values motivations underlying sustained participation digital projects through lenses two social psychology theories (Schwartz’s Human Values Theory Self-Determination Theory). We present in-depth analyses interviews 15 long-term volunteers initiatives (Jarviwiki Safecast) have been collecting environmental data for a decade Finland Japan. Our results advance understanding underpinning motivations. show openness-to-change values, such as self-direction, important initial participation, yet diverse range except power, play role sustaining participation. study also shows related linked extrinsic motivations, suggesting when motivators self-directed, will not only perform tasks willingly enthusiastically but manner. Conceptualizing behavioral continuum drives volunteering actions provides practical insights can assist design, development, evaluation platforms.
