摘要: Although our comprehension on the functions of human insula has greatly benefited from functional neuroimaging and cortical stimulation studies over past two decades, lesion provide unique insights role(s) it exerts in neuropsychological functioning. However, cerebral damage confined to insular cortex is extremely uncommon. The characterization deficits due injury further complicated by possible specialization each hemisphere, variety clinical presentations associated with lesions damaging different parts insula, fact that almost all are unilateral. This chapter reviews literature consequences humans. A selective review performed, more consideration given isolated ischemic strokes. effects very heterogeneous, being reported sensory (somatosensory, interoceptive, vestibular processing, neglect, audition, olfaction, taste), cognitive (speech, memory, attention, executive functions), affective (emotional experience, social cognitive, risky decision-making) domains. In many cases, transient or alleviated time. various congruent widespread connectivity other brain regions.
