摘要: Summary The status of the Amboseli rhino population has given rise to particular concern, due an apparently rapid decline since 1950s. Information on causes death is available over last 3-3 years and ground counts give a reasonable picture gross structure rhinos. Aerial indicate significant provide estimates which reconstruction changes possible. It shown that been declining at average about 12% per annum 4 least. Seventy-five cent mortality results from spear wounds inflicted by Maasai. Natality dropping rapidly, while level spearing increasing. Spearing possibly nonselective, so age-distribution may be similar previous periods when was more stable. As result, natality probably not responding increasing mortality. It concluded unable effectively alter magnitude through intrinsic factors, or immigration. would take twice its present size offset impact spearing. The effect rapidly changing environment considered, but although it result in slightly less favourable conditions for rhinos, any completely masked reasons recent increases are discussed, as well future prospects implications.
