Interactive effects of sex and timing in self‐disclosure

摘要: Previous research on self-disclosure (SD) identifies timing of disclosure as a factor in its attractiveness and indicates that the appropriateness is partly defined by social norms relating to discloser's sex. In 2×2×2 design present study examined interactive effects target (subject) sex, discloser (confederate) sex influences interpersonal judgements made about self-disclosing other. Factor analysis revealed presence two main factors (likeability discloser; mental stability) which nonetheless behaved relatively independent ways under conditions study. No or interaction were found liking factor, but stability ratings influenced disclosure, × interactions. Whilst previous received some support from this study, conceptualization role SD was be inadequate. Results also suggest simple sex-norm interpretation SD's appropriateness, whilst largely correct, needs refined number respects are clarified observation partners.
