Long lasting mucoadhesive membrane based on alginate and chitosan for intravaginal drug delivery

摘要: The intravaginal route of administration can be exploited to treat local diseases and for systemic delivery. In this work, we developed an alginate/chitosan membrane sufficiently stable in a simulated vaginal fluid able dissolve over time at very slow linear rate. demonstrated good mechanical properties both its swollen dry form. As study case, evaluated the viability potential drug delivery system treatment bacterial vaginosis, common disease affecting women their reproductive age. Metronidazole was effectively included bactericide effect against Staphylococcus aureus Gardnerella vaginalis, simultaneously showing biocompatibility with cervix epithelial cell line. Since is environment, easy fabricate used controlled release model drug, it represents promising applications.
