摘要: Life generates discontinuites (boundaries) in the distribution of matter and energy. One class these constitutes edges between habitat-types; are fundamental structures landscape functioning, hence central importance conservation biology. The symposium on which this series papers is based focused responses mammals to habitat edges. A diversity views represented, a variety edge related behaviors illustrated. survey general ecology texts dating back 1933 demonstrates decline interest ecotones effects extending into 1980's but showing resurgence 1990's. Habitat defined operationally with respect particular focal species leading number important corollary features. phenomena subsumed under ‘edge effects’ emphasized, an initial attempt at classification proposed primarily presence or absence emergent properties response (matrix vs. ecotonal effects). This scheme provides for clear null hypotheses needed distinguish two types, enlightens mechanistic explanations effects, encourages predictions about results untested management schemes other novel situations. use design corridors tied behaviors. functional definition urged, so that their effectiveness can be judged specified attributes rather than collection things might termed corridors. Linear patches specifically excluded from definition. Studies small have contributed our understanding potential role metapopulation dynamics. Fine versus coarse grained perceptions environment by different will generate such as spillover predation. In general, processes various operating spatial scales seems fruitful direction future research.
