The Social Ecology of Red-Light Districts: A Comparison of Antwerp and Brussels

摘要: Research on modern red-light districts (RLDs) is deficient in some key respects. Centered largely street prostitution zones and nations where illegal, this literature gives insufficient attention to settings RLDs consist of a cluster indoor venues that are legal regulated by the authorities. Using classic Chicago School research vice as point departure, article examines physical structure social organization two Belgian cities: Antwerp Brussels. The comparative analysis identifies major differences ecology settings. Differences explained distinctive ways which each municipal government manages its respective RLD, related contrasting backgrounds political capital population residing vicinity district. Policy implications briefly discussed.
