摘要: Abstract. Continental shelves play a key role in the cycling of nitrogen and carbon. Here physical transport biogeochemical transformation processes affecting fluxes into out continental shelf systems are reviewed, their global both elements is discussed. Uncertainties magnitude organic inorganic matter exchange between open ocean major source uncertainty observation-based estimates carbon fluxes. The shelf-open hard to quantify based on observations alone, but can be inferred from models. Model-based budgets presented for Northwestern North Atlantic shelf. Results indicate that an important sink fixed alkalinity, not much more efficient exporting deep than adjacent region considered.
