`Total pain', disciplinary power and the body in the work of Cicely Saunders, 1958–1967

摘要: Pain first emerged as an area of clinical specialisation in the 1950s, but more recently has attracted wider interest from social scientists and clinicians who seek to expand its understanding incorporate ideas about meaning, embodiment culture. So far there have been few empirical studies which focus on how practices pain are changing modern healthcare. This paper addresses these issues through a specific case study early writings Cicely Saunders period 1958–1967. A professional training three disciplines nursing, work medicine, coupled with strong personal religious faith, provided biographical context for development Saunders' concern pain. Through influences we find her dying patients emphasis key unlocks other problems something requires multiple interventions resolution. From here concept `total pain' is formulated, include physical, psychological, social, emotional spiritual elements. concept, proved so important hospice practice, shown paradoxical conflicting implications. Adopting current theory body, may be formulated either nomenclature inscription, or facilitation. It suggested that both at discourse appreciation each enhances our concept.
