摘要: Bacterial motility relies chiefly on the rotation of a molecular propeller, flagellar filament, which is constructed from protein flagellin. Here, flagellin sequence conservation and diversity examined in light recently determined filament structure. As expected, surface-exposed domains are not conserved. However, sequences that mediate assembly show remarkable conservation, indicates all bacterial flagellins likely to pack into filaments similar manner. Flagellins provide striking illustration twin evolutionary themes variability.
