Qualitative insights into how men with low-risk prostate cancer choosing active surveillance negotiate stress and uncertainty

摘要: Active surveillance is a management strategy for men diagnosed with early-stage, low-risk prostate cancer in which their monitored and treatment delayed. This study investigated the primary coping mechanisms following active plan, specific focus on how these interact social network as they negotiate stress uncertainty of diagnosis approach. Thematic analysis semi-structured interviews at two academic institutions located northeastern US. Participants include 15 surveillance. The decision to follow reflects desire avoid potentially life-altering side effects associated options. Men cope by both maintaining sense control over daily lives, well relying support provided them networks medical community. Social encouraging lifestyle changes serving resource discuss ease cancer-related stress. Support systems do not always interface directly Spousal play important roles helping understand accept chosen care plan. It may be beneficial highlight role interventions targeting psychosocial health
