A new approach based on the analysis of cocaine (COC) metabolites, benzoylecgonine (BE) ecgonine methyl ester (EME), in water samples was applied to 28 rivers 37 waste treatment plants Belgium using solid-phase extraction liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry. While EME undetectable, COC BE were detectable with concentrations ranging <1 753 ng/L 2258 ng/L, respectively. employed calculate local amount abused cocaine. The highest values (up 1.8 g/day per 1000 inhabitants) found large cities during weekends. estimation abuse through can be executed regular basis without cooperation patients.
