摘要: Thin sections, freeze-etched, and negatively stained preparations of Methanocorpusculum sinense cells reveal a highly lobed cell structure with hexagonally arranged surface layer (S layer). Digital image processing envelope fragments show that the S forms porous but strongly interconnected network. Since is exclusive component outside cytoplasmic membrane it must have shape determining maintaining function. Although lattice faults such as disclinations dislocations are geometrical necessity on closed protein crystal, our data indicate they also play important roles sites for incorporation new morphological units, in formation structure, division process. In freeze-etched intact numerous positive negative 60 degree wedge can be detected which form pentagons heptagons hexagonal array. Complementary pairs termination points edge dislocations. They expected to function both units into initiation The latter determined by ratio between increase protoplast volume actual S-layer area during growth. We postulate this mode fission represents common feature archaebacteria possess an wall component.
