摘要: Management of marine natural resources and ecosystems is relying increasingly on the engagement members public to collect environmental monitoring data for application in research decision-making processes. Despite an accumulating body work which discusses potential benefits engaging better decision-making, there no published analysis whether, fact collected by are used. The aim this was assess utility citizen science resource management Australia. This accomplished investigation into development field ‘citizen science’ its place within community participation frameworks sustainability management. It also reviewed perceived challenges use sciences discussed uses influence policy A validation study undertaken evaluate seagrass condition volunteers using computer-based sampling methods. Citizen scientists (volunteer SCUBA divers) did not differ from experts (professional scientists) their estimates % occurrence seagrasses sand (from video transects), however, they differed a more complex task estimating cover other habitat features photoquadrats). Experts photoquadrats, indicating methods require review may have contributed volunteer results. found activities helpful expanding knowledge scientific processes essential evaluating modifying techniques used protocol. evidence further supports inclusion divers (including monitoring) highlights importance validating professionals prior training volunteers. Results questionnaire distributed researchers, managers, support organisations across Australia demonstrated that being Australia, as well high-quality research. More than 70% respondents (n=185) reported having science-collected decisions or research, with 53
