摘要: Aims: To evaluate factors related to level of narghile (waterpipe) use as a first step towards modeling tobacco dependence among users. Design: Cross sectional survey done in 2003 using interviewer-administered anonymous questionnaires. Setting: Cafes/restaurants serving narghiles Aleppo, Syria. Participants: Narghile smokers (161 men and 107 women; mean age, 30.1± 10.2, 161; age range, 18–68 years; response rate, 95.3%) randomly selected from the 17 cafes/restaurants sampled. Measurements:Frequency (daily, weekly, monthly) was assessed function several potentially indicative dependence, including situational characteristics (where, when, with whom smoking occurs; seasonality use, sharing narghile), attitudes, experience quitting escalation over time, future intentions regarding perception being “hooked” on narghile, cognitions/behaviors engaged support (carrying one’s own narghile; think when it is not available; considering for selection cafes/restaurants). Findings: Frequency strongly correlated participant’s subjective judgment how hooked they are (coefficient, 0.5). Predictors frequency according multinomial logistic regression were: male gender, mainly alone versus others; at home outside; more frequently since initiation, carrying cafe/restaurant choice. Conclusions: Our data reveal two main domains syndrome likely be relevant reflects effects nicotine contained tobacco, very different what seen other products, second unique its social dimension, intensive showing an increasingly individual pattern smoking. © 2004 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
