摘要: Visual search requires participants to for a pre-specified target amongst number of distractors. According theories visual search, attention is directed towards the through combination stimulus-driven (bottom-up) and goal-driven (top-down) means. For example, when searching red car, top-down can prepare system prioritise items with matching properties target, e.g., objects. Theories support guidance according properties, including Guided Search model (Wolfe, 1994) Attentional Engagement Theory (AET: Duncan & Humphreys, 1989). However, whether or not be guided non-visual stimulus, such as semantic name information, remains controversial (Wolfe Horowitz, 1994). This thesis studied (e.g., baseball-bat) in presence semantically related racquet), phonologically identical (homophones, animal-bat) distractors bag). Participants’ reaction times (RTs), error rates, eye movements event-related potentials (ERPs) were monitored, performance compared between young, older adult brain-damaged individuals. Chapters 2 4 report interference all participant groups; Chapter 5 reports homophone young adults 6 no by adults. The results being whole-name information about only. mechanisms involved this contributions these findings will discussed.
