摘要: An experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of spectral modifications on similarity structure for a set musical timbres. The stimuli were 16 music instrument tones, 8 which modified in pairs. This modification consisted exchanging shape energy distribution between two tones within each pair. three‐dimensional spatial representation similarities among obtained by multidimensional scaling techniques and compared previous original unmodified [J. Am. 61, 1270–1277 (1977)]. pairs had exchanged shapes fact orders axis been previously interpreted as relating shape, thereby supporting earlier interpretation. remaining axes solution also retained their interpretations, various temporal details tones. A formal quantitative models dimension constructed tested, results further supported interpretation this perceptual axis.
