摘要: Background and aims Intentional asphyxiation leads to cerebral hypoxia, starving the brain of oxygen inducing hypoxic euphoria, but carries a serious risk accidental death, especially if practised alone. This article raises question as whether it could usefully be regarded having addictive properties. Methods results A review literature, together with eight case study vignettes, are presented. can occur or without sexual activity. Initiation often occurs in adolescence, development some cases an entrenched behaviour pattern, driven by strong euphoriant effect, adequate safeguarding from harm, being undertaken people comorbidities. There does not appear evidence seeking support for cessation practice. Conclusions behaviours may have properties, understanding this aspect problem fruitful guiding research interventions aimed at addressing it.
