Roost selection and switching in two forest-dwelling bats: implications for forest management

摘要: The structure of woodland bat communities is influenced by numerous environmental factors, and amongst these, the availability suitable roosts prime importance. Temperate zone forest-dwelling bats use a great variety roost types, ranging from natural tree cavities to human-made shelters. Given frequent habit forest switch roosts, even within reproductive season, bat-friendly management requires information about number necessary maintain populations. We identified rate switching, used site characteristics two species at risk, Bechstein’s (Myotis bechsteinii) Barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus) in suburban forests SW Switzerland. Radio tracking 9 M. bechsteinii females showed that colony least 15 sites an area 3 km2 throughout season. B. barbastellus 11 located France areas km each other.
