摘要: Abstract Environmental impact assessment (EIA) was first introduced in Pakistan based on the Protection Ordinance 1983. The EIA process further strengthened under Act 1997, which became operational Regulations 2000. Despite a sound legal basis and comprehensive guidelines, evidence suggests that has not yet evolved satisfactorily Pakistan. An evaluation of system against systematic criteria, interviews with approval authorities, consulting firms experts, reveals various shortcomings system. These mainly include; inadequate capacity deficiencies screening scoping, poor quality, public participation weak monitoring. Overall, is used presently as project justification tool rather than planning to contribute achieving sustainable development. Whilst are challenging, central government recently shown high degree commitment environmental protection by making compulsory for all sector projects likely have adverse impacts. paper identifies opportunities taking advantage current environment strengthening process.
