摘要: Aims. Pointed observations with XMM-Newton provide the basis for creating catalogues of X-ray sources detected serendipitously in each field. This paper describes creation and characteristics 2XMM catalogue. Methods. The catalogue has been compiled from a new processing EPIC camera data. main features pipeline are described detail. Results. catalogue, largest ever made at wavelengths, contains 246 897 detections drawn 3491 public over 7-year interval, which relate to 191 870 unique sources. fields cover sky area more than 500 deg(2). non-overlapping is similar 360 deg(2) (similar 1% sky) as many regions observed once by XMM-Newton. probes large flux limit where bulk objects that contribute background lie provides major resource generating large, well-defined selected source samples, studying population identifying rare object types. presented, including its photometric astrometric properties
