摘要: Indoor air quality problems resulting from the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become an issue increasing concern. Emissions building and furnishing materials, which are frequently constructed particleboard medium density fiberboard (MDF), a potentially important contributor indoor VOCs. In this research, VOC emissions MDF were measured in small (53-L) stainless steel chambers for 4 days. Samples collected 53 61 U.S. mills that produce MDF. Each mill identified predominant tree species used to manufacture panels. Laboratory tests conducted at room temperature 45 percent relative humidity. Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analysis was identify quantify compounds. The samples terpenes aldehydes, although straight-chain alcohols ketones also found. This study describes aldehyde data, excluding formaldehyde. such as hexanal, pentanal, heptanal, octanal, nonanal, generally exceeded other accounted more than 50 oftotal emissions. All 16 18 emitted most prevalent found (excluding formaldehyde). showed differences composition factors by product type. On average, southern pine considerably particleboard. all samples, however, lower those same group. With exception formaldehyde, aldehydes not added adhesives bond wood, they previously been reported extractable wood. Degradation ofthe wood or its secondary metabolites is probably responsible presence aldehydes.
